won’t be at the first throw is ½. The probability that “heads” won’t be neither
in the firs nor in the second throw is (1/2)2 or ¼. Than this probability is decreasing in
geometrical progression. Out of three throws – it’s 1/8, out of four – 1/16…
out of ten -1/1024.
Thus, the probability that ”heads” occurs one time out of ten makes more
than 99,9%. Can we assert that you will win 1$ in this game from me?
Of course we can: the probability
of 0,999 is close to 100%. But for this it’s necessary that I agreed to play on
such conditions and, secondly, to have a sufficient sum of money: as to the 10th
throw, if “heads” doesn’t occur earlier you’ll pay me 511$
(1+2+4+8+16+32+64+128+256) and amount of 10th stake will come to
512$ - 1023$ in total.
The same situation is in roulette, if you stake on so-called equal
chances : red and black, odd and even, less and more. The difference is that
probability of occurrence of any of these chances is little less than a half –
not 1/2, but 18/37 (due to “zero” in
roulette).
Let’s try to calculate the same strategy for several subsequent stakes.
Supposing you stack only on red.
The probability that red won’t be in the first throw (roulette’s
launch), makes 19/37 or 0,513513. The probability that it won’t appear in the
second throw neither, - (19/37)2 or 0,256756.
On this principle of consistent stake’s increment in case of lose are
based many roulette playing systems, the most popular of which is called “ Martingale”
or, rather, we should call martingale not a system but a principle on which
infinite number of playing systems are based. Someone professes stake’s growth
after the loss, others, vice-versa,- after the win, another one might prefer
more complicated combined schemes.
Here’s the basic scheme:
Stake $100 on red. If there’s red, you’ve reached your goal – you
won100$. If there’s black – come to step 2.
Stake $200 on red in order to
return your 100$, lost on step 1, and
get another 100$ in case of win.
If there’s red – you succeed, if black – go to step 3.
Now you bet $400. In case of win – you have your $100 ($400 minus lost earlier $300 = $100). If you
lose – you stake twice the previous sum.
Step 4 - $800
Step 5 - $1600
Step 6 - $3200
Step 7 - $6400
Step 8 - $12800
Step 9 - $25600
Step 10 - $51200 etc.
Achieved result may be considered encouraging : The win probability with
the stake on equal chances is almost 99%. Not so bad as for casino game – you
could try to risk…
But the trouble is
